SCENE 3-9 DAGOBAH EXTERIOR, NEAR LUKE'S X-WING

Sound: External Dagobah comes up. Artoo's running noises in near background, various servos and efectuators as the droid helps prep I he X-wingfor departure.

ARTOO: TOOTLES AN INTERROGATIVE TO LUKE.

LUKE: What, Artoo? No, leave all of Yoda's things here. They belong here.

ARTOO: A SAD LITTLE CONSOLING NOISE.

LUKE: I can't do it, Artoo. I can't go on alone.

HEN: (OFF, VOICE PROCESSED TO INDICATE GHOSTLY VISITATION) Yoda will always be with you, Luke.

LUKE: Ben!?

HEN: You must bear in mind what Yoda taught you, Luke. Your (lestiny comes swiftly upon you now.

LUKE: Why didn't you tell me the truth? You told me Vader be-I rayed and murdered my father.

HEN: Your father was seduced by the dark side of the Force. He ceased to be Anakin Skywalker and became Darth Vader. When that happened, the good man who was your father was destroyed. So what I told you was true . . . from a certain point of view.

LUKE: A certain point of view?

HEN: Your father was betrayed and murdered ... by the man he himself became. Luke, you're going to find that many of the truths we cling to depend greatly on our own point of view.

LUKE: You let me think I was training to face my father's killer, not to slay my own flesh and blood.

BEN: When I first knew him, your father was already a great pilot. But I was amazed how strongly the Force was with him. I took it upon myself to train him as a Jedi. I thought that I could instruct him just as well as Yoda might have. I was wrong.

LUKE: There is still good in him, Ben.

BEN: He's more machine now than man. Twisted and evil.

LUKE: I can't do what you expect of me.

BEN: You must face Darth Vader again. You cannot escape your destiny, Luke.

LUKE: I can't kill my own father.

BEN: Then the Emperor has already won. You were our new hope, our only hope.

LUKE: But—Yoda spoke of another.

BEN: The other he spoke of is your twin sister.

LUKE: I have no sister.

BEN: To protect you both from the Emperor you were hidden from your father when you were born. The Emperor knew, as I did, that if Anakin were to have any offspring they would be a threat even to Palpatine's vast power. That is the reason why your sister has remained safely anonymous.

LUKE: And yet sometimes I sense that "other" out there, her blood the same as mine. Someone I've never quite seen through the mist but someone I've always known. Someone I know so well. . . (SOTTO VOCE) Leia! Leia's my sister.

BEN: Your insight serves you well. But bury your feelings deep down, Luke. They do you credit but they could be made to serve the Emperor.

LUKE: Yoda felt Leia was another hope for defeating the Emperor.

BEN: So he said, but your sister has had no training as a Jedi.

LUKE: Maybe it doesn't have anything to do with being a Jedi. M;iybe Leia has some destiny beyond the Jedi way.
